| The Four-Blocks Literacy Model was developed to meet the diverse needs of all children regardless of their learning styles. It is a research-based, classroom-tested method of instruction that has proven to be very successful for students in grades 1-3. Children learn in different ways--some are strong visual learners; others are better auditory learners. Traditionally however, educators have used only one method for teaching language skills. To solve this problem, the Four-Blocks balanced framework was designed as a four-in-one program of instruction for teaching children how to read and write. The model is a framework for organizing the daily curriculum; it is not something that is done in addition to existing lessons. The four instructional blocks that make up the framework are Guided Reading, Self-Selected Reading, Writing, and Working with Words. Within this model, student's are exposed to all four approaches on a daily basis. If one approach doesn't fit a particular student's learning style, there are three other approaches that could be the perfect match for effectively teaching a student how to read and write. |
